"The Usual Suspects" SOLD by Kim Rempel, daily painter, Canada

When I lined up these bottles to paint it reminded me of a police line-up, hence the title. It made me laugh! I enjoy painting wine bottles - all those greens! I was moving fairly quickly, trying to keep things loose and snappy.

"Loaded!" by Canadian daily painter Kim Rempel

My remnants of lunch. I was casting about for a subject and my husband suggested I paint a slice of our leftover pizza. It was particularly colourful and a very tasty combination: tomatoes, hot peppers, onions, green peppers and bacon. Crispy, hot and delicious.

"Trainers" by Canadian daily painter Kim Rempel - SOLD

Or more appropriately, "Stinky Trainers". This was a challenge from Ralph, who said, sure, I could paint pretty shoes, but he'd like to see what I'd do with his smelly trainers. So here you are Ralph! : ) The blue packet on the top shoe is a neat little velcro pocket that he stores his key in when running. Thanks Ralph - it was fun!

"Sunflower in the breeze" by Canadian daily painter Kim Rempel - SOLD

Today the sunflowers caught my eye. A quintessential sign of summer. A few weeks back we drove by a field of sunflowers and they kind of reminded me of meerkats ...lol - all heads turned the same way, standing at attention. It was such a totally cheery site!!

"Fiddle scroll" - SOLD - by Canadian daily painter Kim Rempel

One of the beautiful parts of this instrument. This fiddle belongs to one of my children, who has just completed his first year of lessons and will be saying goodbye to his teacher (who is moving) tomorrow. She has been a wonderful teacher: she thought outside the box, fed his curiosity, kept him engaged and of course, taught him the skills.

"Cool steppin'" SOLD and a visit to the National Gallery

I've run out of shoes from my sister's closet. Maybe she'll dig around in there a bit further and lend me some others. If you think her shoes are fun, you should see her jewellery! : ) Actually, I think I will take Ralph up on his offer to paint his stinky trainers (see comment on yesterday's post). Ralph - I'll be waiting for the photo!!

As for the second photo - we just came back from a holiday in Ottawa, Ontario and while there I made sure to take time to go to the National Gallery. This is one of my favourite things about the gallery - the outdoor sculpture "Maman" by Louise Bourgeois. The spider stands about 30' high and in its egg sac holds white marble eggs. It really has an awesome presence. Look at the person walking in the bottom right of the photo to get some perspective on the size.

As for the gallery, the architecture thrilled me as always. There was an exhibit on Pop Art (Warhol, Haring, Koons, etc...) and it was exhibited fantastically. They recreated Keith Haring's Popshop, had a gold metallic room, some hot pink - just a very exciting layout - but although I love some of the work, some of it was kind of...meh.

But, in the permanent collection, there were a few that I couldn't take my eyes off. My highlights were "Grand Riviere" by Peter Doig (a new favourite artist but the online image does nothing for how spectacular the piece truly is); paintings by my beloved Group of Seven, "Hope 1" and various drawings by Gustav Klimt, and lastly, an exquisite graphite drawing by Johann F. Overbeck (previously unknown to me).

"Beaded mosaic sandal" by Canadian daily painter Kim Rempel - SOLD

My sister let me raid her closet for another pair : ) These sandals are a bonus: splash and comfort! The tops are covered in tightly sewn beads and sequins. Challenging to paint - to still keep it loose while trying to portray the flash.

"Ruby jewelled heel" by Canadian daily painter Kim Rempel

Shoes again! I was missing them ; ) This sparkling little number belongs to my sister - isn't it the best? They are sequined and beaded and remind me of an exotic slipper. Very, very pretty. You could put these on with a paper bag and feel glamourous : )

"Peachy Keen" by Kim Rempel - SOLD

So I wanted to get back to a close-up of the peach. I thought that Mondays painting turned out to be the best of the previous three and wanted to explore it further. I like the more graphic quality of this one. And I like the way the pit juts out of the flesh.

"Just peachy" by Canadian daily painter Kim Rempel - SOLD

Our luscious Niagara peaches are full-on right now and they are delicious! The peach stone on this variety are a brilliant red. Really pretty cool! Nature is awesome don't you think?

Power up

This is a summer replay : ) It's been a weekend of summer parties, lingering dinners and fine visits with family and friends.
I painted this piece February 15th. It was a view from my studio window. I wanted to paint outside but wimped out due to the cold. Hard to imagine now : )

Country colour

A plein air piece. I paint so many small dailies that sometimes I feel cramped up and then I know it's time to get outside and paint something a little bigger. My goal once autumn hits is to get some large pieces going again. Anyway, this was painted on Sydenham Road in Dundas. A warm, summer evening. The fields were just glowing!

Fast Fuse HotWheel

I asked one of my children to bring me some HotWheels to paint. There are a lot of cool cars! I picked this one, "Fast Fuse" for my first. Ever since I painted some silver shoes, I've been keen on painting silver. The plastic dome part was really tough to get but it came together in the end. HotWheels are great. You can pretty much own any car you like for a couple of bucks! ; ) And no insurance premiums.

Blackberry cupcake

You know when you have those days where you can't paint? I've had about three.
Does anyone know the book Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback? If you do not, go to this link! It is one of the best and you should snap it up for any young one that you love ; ) Anyhow...I was thinking of it today when I was wiping down YET ANOTHER painting.
Finally I went to one I had done on Friday (shown above) and tried to fix it. Normally this never works and the whole things becomes a dog's breakfast (and there were a few of those) but then this finally happened. So this cupcake is for anyone who is feeling frustrated. If I could mail all of you cupcakes, I would ; )
p.s. Oh yes. To explain why I thought of the book, it boils down to you can always make something out of nothing ;)

Butternut in field

Last night was the show opening at Ayrspace. It was a beautiful night: the humidity finally broke and Jill hosted a wonderful event! Very nicely done : ) I am posting this piece today because of the pieces I had hanging, this was Bruce's favourite. That was the other great thing about last night - I got to meet a bunch of wonderful artists, (names and links mentioned on Monday's post) but I got a chance to talk to two of them in depth: Bruce Sherman and Hank Bos. They were very generous with tips & information and all-together lovely people.

Stuck

As in a stapler and glue stick are used to make things stick. It's late ; )
Today I tried something a bit different and worked with really thin paint, handling the background almost more as a wash. Experimenting...

Steppin' out

Love this pair of shoes. Wanted to paint them one more time before I give them back. And if we wore the same size they may have mysteriously gone missing....I kid!

Inspired!

Because how can you not be wearing these?! Aren't they great? Jill of Ayrspace lent me these when I asked if I could please paint them. Yes...that's what's become of me... lol

Fishy shot glass

A muggy holiday Monday but it's been a really good day. First I had tea with a friend that was long overdue. Thanks E ; ) Next it was off to AyrSpace Gallery (with my sister - long overdue as well and a great time catching up ; ) to drop off my pieces for the upcoming show: Summertime, the living is easy. I will be participating in this show with fellow artists Bruce Sherman, Donelda Janzen, Eve Yantha, Hank Bos, Jeanette Obbink and Kathleen Thorsen.
The opening is this Friday evening from 6-8pm. Jill's gallery is BEAUTIFUL! I just love it and am so happy to be a part of things there. Consider this an invitation if you live near by - the more the merrier!
When I got back home I had to paint and decided on a favourite subject - a fish shot glass from my grandparents. I painted him last year here.

Gossip at the races (summer re-run : )

Sorry about the repeat everyone! We've had one of those busy summer weekends with family visiting from out-of-province. It's been a lot of eating and catching up and fun stories, but not much painting time! You may wonder why I bother repeating a painting instead of just skipping a post. Well, for those people that have signed up to receive my paintings every morning in their inbox, I guess I just feel like they should get a piece of mail every day! Even if it's been previously viewed : )
