"Sanctuary"

Done! This piece has been painted for a show called On the Rock - Merging Art and Ecology taking place in March at the Carnegie Gallery in Dundas, Ontario.
It is 24"x36" on gallery wrapped canvas and is acrylic.

Work in progress

At the outset you may not see a lot of changes from the last post but I've added a bunch of background branches and twigs as well as a bunch of texture on the forest floor. Next steps: refining tree trunks (value/colour/texture), defining branches on the ground and then working with the sky. I'm pretty happy with the way it's coming together!

In the pink

This is the other plein air painting I forgot to post. Evening sunset, thick shrubbery/woodland...such a pretty time of the evening.

Along the creek - SOLD

The woods along the creek. Spring is here and the fresh yellow green of the new leaves is sparkling everywhere you look.

Untitled

Just finished this ( I think I've finished it) so I haven't come up with a title yet. I began this piece in fall and put it aside, not sure which direction to go with it. The "bones" were there, but I still had more to do. It was painted in an old cedar grove that feels quite magical. The ground is like sponge, the scent woodsy and green and once inside you're cushioned from ambient noise. Serenity. These four twisted, beautiful trunks rose from the ground and made me think of a group of old friends or siblings.

Twisted apple II

Well, I didn't leave much time to think about it, did I! It was bothering me so I decided to have at it right away. I am liking the canopy. I think the colour of the sky works better with the piece and I like the stronger shapes of sunlight in the leaves. I'm unsure about the grass. I think the sunlit strip behind the tree may not be the best shape, and am wondering about how I've handled the background woods. But it is definitely on the upswing. I'll keep you posted.
