Bliss

This is another painting from that beautiful backyard! As I was painting there was a warm breeze, and the scent of lilacs and lily-of-the-valley wafting around. A peaceful moment...

Yellow magnolia

Today I was painting in a friend's unbelievable backyard and I discovered a yellow magnolia tree! (*gasp*) An uncommon variety of staggering beauty ; ) The lush flowers are just begining to open. Love, love, love.

Another mundane entry : )

Cool! Another surprise this evening. I received this submission for the "mundane object impromptu challenge" ( a bit of a mouthful ; )! This painting "Creamo" is the work of artist Kristina Steinbring. Love it! Thanks Kristina ; )

Bowmen swamp

So here is the painting I did yesterday evening. This is a good, large piece: 36" square. More than any other painting I've done, this one put me through my paces. The first half hour it looked great (!) then I lost it. Twenty minutes later - boom - awesome again, only to be ruined and almost painted over a few minutes later. Every quarter hour it went from that deep feeling of being in the zone to frustration and gnashing of teeth. And then at the end of the evening it finally came together. And I got smart and left it alone ; )
Below are close-ups of my favourite bits:

"Mundane" submission!

Isn't this lovely? The rusty bottom, the dent...I love the colours! "Bucket" is painted by Elizabeth Frazier. Thank you Elizabeth!

Plein air Tuesday

Today I was out painting at a beautiful site and for the first time in weeks...NO RAIN! Mother Nature must have thought it was a Wednesday ; ) Anyway, it was too dusky to get a proper shot so I will photograph it tomorrow. But it's up there on the path...do you see the small, bluish square? And the photo above is what I was looking at. It felt so darn good to be out there in the freah air, painting away. And to paint large. Ahhh...

Pots

So I painted some pots. Really these are just the dull, plastic green and terra cotta ones from the garden center. Yeah - what happened? lol Guess I just needed to play, stretch differently and mess around.
And Happy Victoria Day! This long weekend also signals the end of frost! It is now officially safe (where I live at least) to plant flowers and herbs etc., which is just what I got to do today : ) It felt so good to be cleaning up the beds and planting. HERE'S TO COLOUR!!

More of the mundane!

I got a surprise in my inbox today - another painting! This gorgeous spray bottle is by Chris Murray. Thank you Chris! Love those greens!

Mundane objects round-up

I've posted the paintings from the two artists who submittted paintings (along with links to their blogs) and they look anything but ordinary! Wow. Beautiful work. Thanks! If anyone wants to submit, feel free and I will post them when I receive them. So thanks to Camille Olsen (flour sifter) and Patti Vincent (hammer). I did the tape dispenser and think I'll move on to flowers next week.

From the garage: Paint roller

My next ordinary item: a paint roller. I received one painting today for the impromptu challenge! For anyone who didn't read yesterday's post, you're invited to submit a painting of an object that normally people would find dull and boring. It's all about *finding the beauty*. I'm painting a few items from my garage. I'll post all the submissions this Sunday and have an online "mundane object party" ..lol

From the garage: Skein of twine and a CHALLENGE!

This is a skein of twine - the really rough, hairy kind. We keep it in the garage hooked on a nail. I thought I'd do a few paintings of items from the garage. It's all about finding beauty in the ordinary. Visual artist are clearly keyed into that, although it's definitely not exclusive to our occupation. Hmm...I just thought of something. A little challenge!
How about finding one of the most mundane objects you can and painting it? Find the beauty! Now, I'm not the Daily Paintworks but hey - it could be fun ; ) Just post it on your blog, but also send it over to me and I will post all of them with links back to your blogs. Just something a little different to try over the next few days : )

Snaps from yesterday's plein air

So I re-took the picture of the pine I painted yesterday - here it is. A bit better lighting.
I am also  being brave and posting a picture of a painting I am unhappy with. The right hand side is a mess.
I like the bit of the barns on the left but that willow on the right needs more structure or something. Now it looks like a yellow washed out fluff ball. So I don't know if I can salvage this piece or not. I have a feeling not, but I can always gesso over it.

Plein air

Today I was out plein air painting. For the first half hour the rain held off and I was able to work on a piece I had started last week (middle picture). I was prepared: I had a thermos of tea, my winter coat, toque, and rain pants. My husband also made a quick modification on my easel by securing an umbrella on it with tie-wraps ; ) Between this and the handy things he attached to the bottoms of the legs that allow me to push a screwdriver through and secure my easel to the ground - for windy conditions (pic below) - I was kitted out pretty well. Unfortunately when the rain started coming, it came down steadily. My palette was quickly soaked turning my acrylics into puddles. Ugh.
I moved to a new location under a shed and leaks from the roof made me have to find another new spot. I did find shelter (and a good viewpoint) under another outbuilding and got this painting below of a pine. So all was not lost. But gosh - are we ever getting a lot of rain! And curiously it's always coinciding with painting night! Tomorrow I'll post a close-up of the painting in the middle shot. There are some nice things happening in it but I've got a big problem on the right hand side. Possibly fixable, we'll see!
Still, when you're in the zone and it's working, there's nothing like it.

Photographed in my van in the rain - not the best lighting conditions.
Just before the rain began.

Flying frog - SOLD

A flying frog for you today - because really, they're just too cool! I was kind of going into frog withdrawal. I hadn't painted them until I did the two pieces in April (6th and 8th) but as I found out when I painted my first shoe, I just love painting them! Some subjects just seem to come a little more naturally than others.

Bee on floor - SOLD

Should I tell the truth? This was actually a dead bee I found on my studio floor. But if that bothers you, just pretend this little bee was having a nap ; ) I saw it there the other day and decided to save it. Then I thought what the heck, I'd paint it. It was nice and still after all!

Mushrooms

Blogger's back! Sorry about that everyone!
When I was shopping for the radishes for the last painting I picked up some mushrooms. After painting the white dog, I wanted to again explore the colour variations I could get in other objects that are thought of as kind of neutral. Loved playing around with these greys and browns. I don't like to actually use a brown from the tube though, except for underpainting - I prefer to mix them. I think you get more variety and sparkle.

The extra mile - SOLD

I've never painted a stuffed animal on this blog - it was something sub-consciously ingrained in me along my growth as an artist: Stay away from the sentimental due to a high risk of the schmaltz factor!! but I've got to tell you that I made an exception today because of a Facebook post. It seems someone lost this stuffed toy in the vineyard at the market over the weekend and they are trying to reunite it with its owner ; ) The good folks over at The Good Earth put out a "found" poster to aid in their quest (if you're on FB you can check it out). I was just kind of touched by this unexpected effort on their part. It was a nice thing to read over my bowl of Mini-Wheats and made me smile.

"Small gifts" by Canadian daily painter Kim Rempel - SOLD

Have you ever been given a Dandelion/Creeping Charlie/ Violet bouquet? Did you ever pick dandelions and give them to your Mom? I've given and received many - and honestly love their charm. You may not believe me but I actually like dandelions (except when all of them are in that fluffy stage and look really scraggly).
My Mom once told me a story that shows it's all just a matter of conditioning. She was in a garden center in Texas and saw what appeared to be Crepping Charlie in a pot, *gasp* - for sale! She double-checked with the clerk and yep - it was Creeping Charlie! The clerk said something to the effect of "yeah, they were so pretty, it was a shame that they could be difficult to grow" I guess by now you've figured out that in Canada they're considered a lawn nuisance and don't get ANY love! They infiltrate lawns and people just hate this "weed"! At our house there is a fair bit of it mixed in with our grass and I've just decided to think of them as bonus purple flowers. And hey - together with our dandelions they kind of go with my blue/yellow theme :)

Weekend update!

So here are a few pictures of my table at The HandMade Market this weekend at The Good Earth. It was a beautiful two days! 40 cool vendors and delicious food (my fave: Asian slaw with chicken and shrimp satay - with "kickass peanut sauce"). A lovely way to spend two days. I met some people that I had previously only corresponded with on-line and they were so nice! One of the perks of the job ; ) Thanks to all those who stopped by my table to say hi, to Nicolette and everyone else at The Good Earth for being such fun hosts, and to The HandMade Market for another successful weekend! By the way, both can be looked up on Facebook!

"Cupcake" by Canadian daily painter Kim Rempel - SOLD

Today I hade a terrific studio visit with a friend/fellow artist I've recently begun to know. It was great to talk shop (!) and then we got on the topic of art education. We had a lot to say! Remember painting with those tempera "pucks" on newsprint? And then how it would flake off on your way home from school? And those chunky hogshair brushes that left stray bristles on your artwork? Ugh! I would love to get into a classroom and do some sessions with quality materials. My dream is to take a class outdoors for plein air painting - with canvasses! and real brushes!! Ach...as you can see we got quite fired up over our visit! : ) Here's to art education. This may be a whole other post in the near future.
Anyway, today I painted this cupcake. And had fun ; ) And this "good food" reminds me of the "Good Earth" this weekend! I will be there with my daily paintings Saturday and Sunday from 11-5. 40 awesome vendors + delectable food + wine = Mother's Day planning solved!
