"Bus!" + oh boy...

So I was all happy with my bus...and then my husband walked in and said: Can I say something without you taking offense?
Me (feeling slight offense that he would think my ego so fragile...lol): Yes!
Him: Your bus is not quite right. The snout is painted like you're looking at it straight on but you can see the side of the bus.
Me: Hmm. Damn. How did I not notice that! Perhaps the bus had been in a collision and the frame was bent? Or...I'm painting it for a 2 year-old. I don't think she'll notice? Ahh...no. I just had to face facts. I got my perspective wrong. And it's a darn shame I didn't catch it in the drawing stage!
I also got an email from a fellow blogger friend pointing it out to me in a very nice way (which I totally appreciated it! It can't be all glitter and sunshine). So although there are things I like about this piece, I am re-doing it. I will keep you posted!

I love it that you post your "mistakes" as well as successes! I try to do the same, knowing that most of my readers are other artists and might learn something from it too! I know that I'll always pay attention to perspective in vehicles because of this, and also to carefully check the sketch before painting!

Before you repaint it just try repainting the grill! Just move it a bit to the right and I think you're all set. To see what I mean just cover it with your thumb. Vehicles are tough to paint, sometimes the smallest change can make a huge difference. Good luck!

I would not have noticed the perspective problem..kind of Matissy

Well, actually I think that this is what gives the bus character - I love it :0D

Honestly I didn't see it, now that you've pointed it out I see it a *little* bit, but to me it still looks like an amazing bus!!

My husband has learned to never say the words "don't take offense" unless he is prepared to also present me with shoes or chocolate. he, he. I have a bit of a fragile ego, I'll admit it. And also a weakness for shoes and chocolate. :))))

i heartily disagree! the snout is what makes this not just a nice painting of a school bus! it has character and charm and significance! i was drawn to this because of the snout!! i think it's perfection. your interpretation of it is what makes it art! LOVE it!

I posted a tractor sketch and someone told me it was great except for the flat tire which wasn't supposed to be flat. I've learned to accept that people, like my husband,...is this a man thing?-I'm sure it's not... will see perspective errors that float right over my head and so I continue to work at it like Caligula. Thanks for sharing...I would have NEVER noticed the bus "perspective error" :>))

I'm back. I just showed this to John the husband and he saw the perspective issue immediately but LOVED the painting! (He has fond memories of his bus days, I'm sure).

Don't you just hate it with that happens. Had that same experience just recently....and I know, it all starts with the drawing being correct. Sometimes we just have to be reminded. It's a great painting, know you'll niece will love it!

I agree with Michael Chamberlain in that I think you could correct it without re- doing the whole painting. It's a great bus!!

Rule number one: Don't ever ask you husband what he thinks. They never say the right thing! I think this bus just looks like it is turning!

the most fun reading all the comments
about this wonderful little bus!
you can see by her little flirty "curve"
she is loving the moment!
please just leave it alone! ;)

Kim, I can't count the number of times I have made a sketching error that doesn't become apparent till I'm more than halfway through the painting, and as I paint in watercolor, not correctable!
Off-centre or not, I really like your bus!!!

It's an articulated bus. Duh!

Kim, you are awesome! I give you so much credit for redoing it. I must say when I first viewed it I thought it was a photo. It is wonderfully rendered. Ok. The perspective is off a little, but you will nail it the next time. Can't wait to see it!

Hubby does have a point drat his rascally hide. Myself I'm glad you made it out from in front of the bus without getting killed. Hard to get perspective correct with bus coming down on you 40 MPH. Excellent quick paint I think.

I like the bus- and I also did not notice the perspective thing! I am also cracking up that the front is called a "snout"!
