Happy New Year

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out 2020🚪Grateful of course for many, many things but also happy to see the back end of this loathsome year.

Looking back at 2020 saw my painting take a bit of a backseat—sustaining concentration was often a challenge 😑—but I started up a tea towel business that has been very gratifying. Definitely a plus. I also ran a kindness project (another plus). I discovered a love of Cheetos and Nerds (this has got to be a minus. Apparently desperate times do require desperate measures). I loved seeing all the “C’est va bien aller”s in people’s windows. I did not love that hugs and handshakes got cancelled. I loved seeing so many people out walking in the evenings. I did not love not being able to have people in our home. And on and on.

So here’s to 2021. May it be a kinder year. I wish each of you days filled with love, peace and belonging. A gentle spirit and curious, intelligent conversation. Laughter to chase away sadness. Drive out loneliness and ask for what you need. Onward.

I was talking to my husband yesterday about how I missed going out for a coffee and going to cafés and parks. Every day feels pretty similar and the calendar is empty. Last night on tv there was a scene where somebody bent close to someone and handed them a drink and I was like *woah on the social distancing—and she’s not even wiping that down!* lol
I guess we adapt fairly quickly to what is required of us but I sure miss being close to people. I think some days people are up and other days people are like “what the heck 😞”

I’ve been wondering if there’s a little something I could do that might spread a bit of sunshine. And then I thought of this: some nice mail. Pretty simple. 🤷‍♀️ If you or someone you know could use some surprise mail DM me and I’ll mail them a note with a small drawing, a poem or a favourite recipe. We’ll see how it goes! 😊 #kindness #surprisemail #thingswillgetbetter

I’ve been taken with all the rainbows taped in windows and hung on doors as a way of spreading hope and optimism during this pandemic. I’ve read it began in Italy and has spread worldwide. What a small but beautiful thing.🌈 I’ve decided to keep a photo journal of sorts of all the ones I see. Right now I’m in Montreal and the rainbows I’ve snapped are in my stories. 🌤🌈 Hope + love my friends 💛

Day 10-13. Caught up on the challenge.
10 - Main inspo: Nature!
11 - On your table: Books
12 - Side job/ other life: I do have a very small other job. I’m at sensory panelist at a research station. But it is only 1.5hrs a week. What I love to do on the side though is BAKE! The last picture is the Yule log I made last Christmas. 🥰
13 - Work in progress. Actually just starting the process so all I would have to show is a gessoed board ; ) Boring.

Prompts 4 & 5 for the #aprilforartists2020 challenge are (4) your preferred media and (5) in your hand.
I am loving my R&F oil sticks. I learned about them in my workshop with @nelsonpainter in Woodstock, NY this summer. Game changer!
And the second picture is a chocolate chip cookie from a batch I made last night. A new recipe showed up in my feed so I gave them a whirl. Pretty delicious. 🍪 @andyseastcoastkitchen_

*Newest work* is Prompt 3 for the #aprilforartists2020 challenge by #phoebeganderart. Jumping in late so playing catch up over the next few days. Not sure if this one is finished yet, but today this is where it stands 👌 36x36in / oil on panel

Hi everyone 👋 I’m jumping into the #aprilforartists2020 challenge a number of days late so am going to try get up-to-speed by combining a few of the prompts in multiple posts.
Prompt 1: an introduction
Prompt 2: my creative space.

Hi. My name is Kim, I live in Ontario, Canada (it was actually snowing this morning 😑) and I’m a painter. I went to school back in the day for illustration (major: children’s picture book, minor: advertising) and have very fond memories of art school 🥰I’ve worked in graphic design, painted plein air, been a daily painter, and now work primarily as an abstract painter! I adore colour, design, fonts, and art in a million forms. Away from the studio I love to do all sorts of creative things 🧡 I also love baking, reading, hiking, and embroidering.
Chips or cookies? Usually cookies.
Coffee or tea? Coffee.
Favourite shows right now: Ozark season 3 was 😮👏 and have just started Money Heist.
Music: Well, I do love me some Leonard Cohen. 🥰
Books: What is the allowable word count on an Instagram post? 😭 Yeah, I could talk books for hours so feel free to leave comments 😉📚
So that’s my super quick intro.
And as for my studio space, here is a shot of my table. Hard to get a cool shot of my studio but I’ll see what I can do for a later post.
Anyway, nice chatting with you all and please feel free to introduce yourself in comments!

No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.

Sending a huge collective shout out of love and respect to all the essential service workers and innovators during this challenging time. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Well, I managed to focus and get an underpinning to my next painting done. My husband suggested I shut off my radio (heavy CBC listener here) and play only music. This did help. 😉 I actually got further than this today but will save that post for tomorrow.
I’ve been finding I’m productive in some areas: baking, embroidering, cleaning and yard work but useless when it comes to focusing on painting. Hopefully I’ve turned that around today.

How’s everyone else out there faring?

And from the limited interactions we’ve shared, she seems like the kind of person I’d love to sit down and have a drink with. If you’re not already following her, head on over to her page and see all of her glorious paintings for yourself. @lisamorganart

Self-isolation Day 5.
We returned from the States last Thursday and have been holed up in our house since then. Taking it seriously. Family and friends are bringing groceries which is very kind! People ask us if we’re bored to tears but so far so good 💪 None of us get bored easily. I paint by myself all day anyway so I’m actually having more interaction then normal. ; )
Alas, I’m not able to go to the studio but here is a painting I was working on before our trip. It’s 36” square. Since I haven’t been able to work on it I’ve been staring at this image for quite a while. 👀 Normally I’d have worked over it a fair bit by now but I have to say, it is really growing on me! I love the energy but think there is still a cohesion and composition in the midst of all that frenetic line work. I may keep it like this. 🤷‍♀️
Anyway, I hope you’re all well and staying put. Kindness + gratitude. 💓💓💓

This is my submission to the ALS Paddle Auction Fundraiser. I decided to go full on Canadiana. 🇨🇦 The handle is painted with the Hudson’s Bay stripes, and each side of the paddle shows an iconic symbol of Canada: the beaver and the maple leaf.
The paddles will be up for auction Saturday, May 2 at Megalomaniac Winery. Tickets available from Eventbrite.
This paddle was painted in memory of our dear friend, John Hamm. 💞

Let’s talk about colour. It’s so personal, eh? My husband has a strong (negative) reaction to a certain green I mix. Whenever I use it in a painting, he never likes the painting. LOL
But there are some colours that just resonate with us so deeply.
Colour memory.
Colour mood.
All that to say I *really* connect with the colours in this piece. Very good associations for me.
What are the colours that draw you in?
(I could talk colour for hours 😉)

ARTLOVE 🖤
Today’s ARTLOVE are paintings by Tom Hodgson (1924-2006). Hodgson was a Canadian painter, born in Toronto. By all accounts he was quite a wild one* 👀 Here are three of my favourite pieces of his: Street Scene #3, 1958; January ‘58, 1958; and Untitled, 1958. I just can’t get over the gorgeous colour, shapes and line. Superb! If you want to read further about him, please check out the beautiful book Painter’s Eleven, The Wild Ones of Canadian Art by Iris Nowell.
*he has quite a story and as a side note, he was also a two-time Summer Olympian in canoe sprinting.
